Why Christian Education?

FAQ about Christian Education

So, what’s new about Christ-centred education?

Nothing! From early times, the church took a lead in the nation to support parents in training children in Godly ways, educating them for life. The first Universities were founded on the same basis. Only as the Church failed to uphold its God-given mandate did the State step in, with its increasingly secularised approach. Being Christ-centred is not ‘alternative’ education but rather true education.

How is Christ-centred education different?

The whole curriculum and way of looking at the world is based on Biblical principles, i.e. the world is God’s and was made by God. He has a plan and purpose for each person in it, all of whom are uniquely loved by Him. We measure all our teaching against God’s Word and show children how His Word applies to everyday life.

Isn’t it narrow?

On the contrary. Christian education presents children with the world in all its aspects, enabling them to relate correctly to it and to make a mature and Godly contribution.

Is it academic?

Certainly, as it is important that each child is helped to reach their full potential. That’s not all though – character formation is vital, as is spiritual development. Each child needs to know and experience the love of God in a personal way through Jesus Christ and have their God-given giftings and potential stretched and developed.

Surely you’re just sheltering them from a harsh world?

No, we are teaching the children to see the world from God’s point of view and to make their own decisions, knowing how God would have them handle difficult issues.

Shouldn’t Christians be salt and light in our society?

Yes, we should be right at the forefront: not putting our untrained, vulnerable children there. By giving them a sound Christian grounding we best prepare them to take their own God-ordained place in society.

What, then, is a Christian School?

Simply, a school in which God and His Word takes central place. It seeks to know God’s world as well as God’s Word. After all, creation is held together in Christ, so no subject, scientific or artistic, can be separated from His revelation of Himself. e.g. History is just His-story and should be taught as the unfolding of God’s purposes in the world.
